This scaled rendition of the goddess of victory with angelic wings spread as she landed on the prow of a ship is thought to be announcing the Rhodian naval victory over Antiochos III. In 1863, Charles Champoiseau, a French amateur archeologist, began a series of excavations in Samothrace, Greece and found the somewhat intact statue.
